This year, between 03 and 16 March 2010, there is an exciting astronomy project taking place, called GLOBE at Night (www.globeatnight.org).
This project involves measuring how light-polluted your night sky is, using a simple star-counting technique.
Schools around the world will be taking part, and I am writing to offer you my services in enabling your school to participate in this project.
I am a professional science communicator with over ten years experience, with previous employment at Glasgow Science Centre (where I ran the planetarium for four years) and as UK co-ordinator for the International Year of Astronomy 2009.
Through taking part in this project your pupils will develop as successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.
Specifically, I can offer classroom activities that address many aspects of the Curriculum for Excellence. I would be happy to discuss with you, or with any of your teachers, how you would like to proceed but can suggest the following activities:
Classroom talk about light pollution and astronomy (1 hour)
PLUS
How to take measurements during GLOBE at Night (2 hours)
AND / OR
Outdoor survey (within school grounds) of light pollution sources around your school (2 hours)
